My unreserved apologies to all for the unconscionable neglect in maintaining the group. I can only allege more important matters regarding personal life coming to the fore and trying to balance that with other activities: my own development as an artist, and being webmaster over at Palaeos.

That said, right at the start of the admin log I notice the same obliviousness by prospective members that had me rather avoid going over the log at Paleoartists. See "Meanwhile at the Paleoartists Group..." for further context on that situation.
The point however is simple: I can't quite understand how people miss the widget with the rules on the Group's profile when one would think that it would be reasonable to try and ascertain if this group, beyond the name, is within the scope of a person's interests.

In any case, as with the other group mentioned, all expired requests to join will be considered valid provided they link to an example of that person's work within the group's theme. If you are approved, send the request again so things can be officialized.

Once more, thank you very much for your patience.
Updated the rules. It's that long custom widget at the top of the profile so people actually read through it. I've lifted a good deal of that text from the other club I manage, Paleoartists. I'll be also copy/pasting some of the pertinent journal entries from there.

Anyway feel free do discuss any changes you'd like made to the rules. As members before conversion have, or haven't, jumped through these hoops before I'll make a point of exceptionally using invites to alert the more oblivious or busy ones to the changes. In any case feel free to apply again either strictly (very appreciated if you do) or linking to a deviation that best represents your work nowadays.

I'd like to start discussion on what to do with the deviations posted here during the group's history posthaste.
There are two options:
A) Start from scratch. Delete or store all deviations and reapply again for the group.
B) Migration. Move the whole lot of them to their owners' galleries and have them count for membership on a case by case basis.

These options are not mutually exclusive though I would favour B above all else. Favourites in any case will be removed. You may, however, resubmit them as deviations to the group.

Regarding the fact that I may from time to time fall off from the face of the Earth I'd rather have another two of the older members as co-admins so we've got all bases covered. The gist is that if you agree with the rules as they stand I'll only ask you to enforce them with a modicum of strictness.
I apologize for being an absentee admin for nearly a year now. I can only excuse myself with the vagaries of my life.

Anyway following the group conversion I'll update the rules and we can start making this an active group in earnest.

Meanwhile, to keep ourselves occupied while we wait here are a few quotes from my review of James Cameron's blockbuster movie "Avatar".

"I think my only real gripe about this movie is that the Na'vi were far too humanized for empathy, for them to be credible as a part of the native fauna of Pandora."

"So in response to his wish that hardcore sci-fi fans went in to see the film and had a good time I'd say "'Twas an awesome time spent, Mr. Cameron, but I cannot take blue anthropomorphic lions seriously as aliens.""

Methinks the lot of us could show up Mr. Cameron in developing a neolithic to iron age level alien civilization without falling into the usual pitfalls in the pursuit of empathy. I'll be glad to be proven wrong: at least I'll stop worrying and enjoy the film ;)

As my interest in astrobiology/xenobiology has waned, I have become less interested in this club. Therefore, I am willing to donate ownership of this club to another, more-willing deviant. If you are interested in running this club, please reply to this journal.

**Deadline extended into October**

As I was reminded recently, this club is extremely inactive. In order to help remedy this, I propose that we have a contest. Perhaps even a monthly contest. Yes, that sounds grand.

Here's the deal: I will choose some kind of concept for an alien being each month and you design an alien that fits the description and stated rules. As many of the club members can join as they want. Then, a vote will be held in which the members decide who came up with the best alien based on concept, execution, art quality, originality, etc.

The rules for the alien concept of the month of October 2008 are:

Design an alien that somehow grows diamonds for some useful purpose. For example, your alien might grow a diamond shell out of its own body for protection, diamond-coated claws for hunting, or even glistening, diamond-encrusted feathers for confusing predators. However, the diamond must be produced by the alien's body organically (i.e., it cannot use technology in order to create the diamond). You may go into detail about how it converts carbon-containing compounds from the environment into diamond if you wish.

The deadline for this month is:

October 25, 2008.

*Any questions regarding the rules may be submitted to me. You might want me to check your concepts before you draw them in order for me to make sure that you are complying sufficiently with the rules.
